Why not letting the user install lire (e.g. with --prefix=/tmp/test)
and run the tests from that installed system?  This would be much
easier.  I don't see what running directly from the tarball gains.

What tests are you suggesting?  Processing a small logfile, and
typesetting reports from this in various formats?
