Run configure as
PATHTOPLOTICUS=/usr/local/bin/pl ./configure

You'd probably not even need to patch the Lire tarball.

Probably, yes. I'll hack our configure.in so that it tries to look for
`pl' next to `ploticus'. The final Lire 1.2 should run out-of-the-box.
