Can you verify that ./configure is picking up your DBK_XSL_STYLESHEETS
setting? By looking at the configure.in content, I don't see how could
this happen.
Here is configure's relevant output when I use
DBK_XSL_STYLESHEETS=/usr/share/sgml/docbook/../docbook/stylesheet/xsl/ \
./configure --prefix=/home/francis/tests/lire-unstable
checking for SGML/XML trees... /usr/lib/sgml /usr/share/sgml
/usr/local/share/sgml /usr/share/xml
checking for DocBook XML DTD...
/usr/share/sgml/docbook/dtd/xml/4.1.2/docbookx.dtd
checking for DocBook DSSSL stylesheets...
/usr/lib/sgml/stylesheet/dsssl/docbook/nwalsh
checking for DocBook XSL stylesheets...
/usr/share/sgml/docbook/../docbook/stylesheet/xsl/
And the substitutions work as expected.
