Did you also try installing it on FreeBSD? Did you succeed using gnu
make there?

Hmmmm... I'm afraid not. I assume you are pretty sure you did try it,
using gnu make, in both the toplevel and lowerlever make's. I haven't
got a machine running solaris here, so unfortunately I can't try this
myself.
Perhaps you could post the offending Makefile?

Absolutely not! We're using autoconf and automake to gain in portability.
I hope you succeed in installing the software; getting the stuff tested
on a lot of different platforms by a lot of different people is very
valuable to us.
