Yes, I'm afraid so.  Even when we would be able to work around the
pod2man problems, the scripts themselves will very likely fail.

perl5.003_07.tar.gz is from Oct 11, 1996. Upgrading is not overdone, 
imho.  You'll have a really much better perl: bugs are fixed, security 
holes are closed and features are added. 5.003 is no longer supported 
by the perl maintainers, I just read on the CPAN mirror 
ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/languages/perl/CPAN/src/index.html .

Strictly speaking, you don't really need a network connection to run 
lire.  (You do need to get some logfiles on the machine, that's 
true.)  Is the system planned to get a network connection?  Which 
mandrake version is it running?  If you report a successfull 
install, we could add it to our list of platforms in the README file.
