2.2.17-21mdk is the kernel you're running.  I guess the Mandrake 
release (that's more interesting to state, when talking about 
supported platforms) can be found in some file in /etc; very often 
these files match on *ver*  or *rel* ; so you can do something like

 $ cat /etc/*ver* /etc/*rel*

(I have no linux mandrake box here, so I can't test it; I'm no 
mandrake expert.)

I believe the README file is what you're looking for.  When doing
a make install, the README file does _not_ get installed.  You can
find it in your extracted tarball, however.  (And on 
http://logreport.org/pub/current/README ).  Or do you need more
exhaustive information?
