I've been running into this problem also. My hack around is to use the
"filter" to uncompress the log file in case (e.g. filter=bzcat).

Running a separate preprocessor and postprocessor like you are
suggesting (it's not clear from your sample code where you actually
invoke them though) would seem a somewhat cleaner solution.
