Which Lire version? Assuming the 1.5 release:
You can set lr_debug to true using the lire(1) interface. You should have
a little bit more information to provide to help diagnose the problem.
I suggest you also upgrade to newer versions of the stylesheets and xsltproc.
The FAQ may be outdated. I don't know, it should work with older version but
it wasn't necessarly tested. It works here with version 1.64.1 of the
stylesheets and version 1.1.6 of xsltproc.
Are you using ploticus or GD::Chart to generate the charts?
