I agree.  I got it to work by removing the expat and xml parser rpm's 
that came with RedHat ES 2.1 v.3.  Installed the expat rpm from the 
expat site.  Then kept downloading xml::parser packages and running make 
test till one passed.  Finally 2.34 worked and lire worked.
