Hrm, I am considering fixing this.  Wolfgang: you've written
po/Makefile.am, haven't you?  Did you write it from scratch?  Or was it
inspired by some other project's Makefile.am?

Using the autotools is kinda weird when requiring GNU Make, imho.  It
defeats the purpose.
