I am not very familiar with Import Jobs, as I am not using them myself.

The idea of the Import/Report Jobs interface is that by consolidating
all your log data in a central DLF store, you obtain maximal flexibility
with respect to analysing the data and generating reports from it.
But this comes with a cost, most notably the disk space required to
store the DLF data, as you've observed correctly. Storing only raw
gzip'ped logfiles takes much less space, but requires more processing
and manual management of the file store. You can make your own choice
depending on your requirements and resources.

Perhaps Francis Lacoste can comment on this as well, he is intimately
familiar with the Import/Report Jobs stuff, and has applied it in real
customer situations.
